Botox Therapy

The joints known as temporomandibular joints, located in front of your ears on either side of your head, rely on the cooperation of multiple muscles, ligaments, and bones to facilitate the seamless movement of your mouth. When these joints experience problems, it can result in temporomandibular disorder (TMD), causing difficulties in the proper opening and closing of your mouth.

Botox®

Botox, also known as Botulinum Toxin, is a popular method for achieving a more youthful and refreshed look. This treatment, approved by the FDA, effectively reduces facial lines and wrinkles caused by expression. Commonly treated areas include lines between the eyebrows, crow's feet, and forehead wrinkles. The procedure involves injecting a carefully diluted solution into the muscles using a thin needle, causing minimal discomfort. Patients may feel a slight burning sensation during the injections. The entire process usually takes 15-20 minutes, and the results can last between 3-5 months, with potential for longer-lasting effects with repeated treatments. Botox appointments are quick and suitable for individuals aged 18-65 of both genders who meet the clinical criteria for therapeutic or cosmetic use.

Botox treatment for Temporomandibular Joint Disorder (TMJ)

Did you know that dentists are trained to administer Botox? Our doctors has expertise in using Botox and dermal fillers to treat patients. Although Botox is well-known for its cosmetic benefits, it can also help relieve muscular pain associated with TMJ syndrome (jaw pain). Grinding teeth often leads to muscle pain in the head and neck, along with headaches and jaw discomfort. After a thorough assessment, treatment may involve injecting Botox into the tense facial muscles. These injections are typically painless, and patients respond positively to this therapy. In TMJ treatment, Botox injections are often combined with oral splint therapy. This approach has even provided relief from chronic migraine headaches that didn't respond to other treatments. We're proud to be among the first offices in NY State offering this therapy, showcasing our dedication to enhancing our patients' well-being.

What Are the Benefits of Botox®?

Botox® injections are an effective treatment option for relieving the pain and discomfort associated with TMD and bruxism, also known as teeth grinding. These injections can be included as part of your dental treatment plan.

There are various factors that can contribute to the development of TMJ disorder. In some cases, a strong impact to the face, head, or neck can traumatize the jaw and lead to TMD. For others, misalignment of the bite can cause the joints to become displaced. Additionally, teeth grinding and clenching can result in uneven tooth surfaces and improper jaw closure, which can also contribute to TMD.

Regardless of the cause, the symptoms of TMD are generally consistent and typically start with pain that can range from bothersome to debilitating when opening the mouth to eat, speak, or yawn. Other symptoms may include:

  • Experiencing a popping sound when you open your mouth
  • Feeling as if your jaw is locked in place
  • Experiencing ear pain without any signs of infection
  • Frequently suffering from headaches, particularly tension headaches
  • Noticing swelling along the side of your face
  • Having sensitive teeth

The Process of Botox Treatment

Administering Botox® to the muscles impacted by TMD can alleviate pain, tension, headaches, and facial discomfort resulting from nighttime teeth grinding and clenching. Botox® works by blocking nerve receptors, preventing excessive contraction of the jaw muscles. We carefully administer the right amount of Botox® to relax your muscles while maintaining normal jaw movement for chewing, speaking, and jaw mobility. Botox injections effectively and swiftly relax the muscles responsible for TMJ pain.
